# About the American Association of Christian Counselors

Helping someone through one of the hardest seasons of their life is a tremendous responsibility.

A person may walk into a counseling office carrying grief they haven't been able to process. A marriage might be falling apart. Someone could be struggling with addiction, trauma, anxiety, or questions about their identity and purpose.

For Christian counselors, another question often enters the room:

How do you provide excellent professional care while remaining deeply grounded in your faith?

The [American Association of Christian Counselors](https://aacc.net/?ref=ministryy.com) exists to help answer that question.

AACC brings together Christian mental health professionals and ministry leaders who want their care for others to reflect both professional excellence and a distinctly Christian worldview.

## Where Faith Meets Professional Care

AACC doesn't see Christian faith and high-quality mental health care as competing ideas.

Its approach is built around bringing them together.

AACC serves licensed professionals working throughout the mental health field while also supporting pastors, Christian coaches, lay counselors, students, and others who regularly find themselves caring for people in difficult situations.

That creates a community where someone can grow professionally without feeling as though their Christian convictions have to remain separate from their work.

Scripture remains foundational to AACC's understanding of people and healing.

At the same time, counselors are encouraged to develop professionally and understand the clinical knowledge connected to the people they serve.

## Helping the Helpers Keep Growing

Counselors spend much of their lives helping other people grow.

They need opportunities to grow too.

AACC provides continuing education and professional training that helps Christian mental health professionals strengthen their skills throughout their careers.

CounselTalk webinars allow professionals to learn from experienced voices in Christian mental healthcare, while conferences create opportunities to receive training and connect with others doing similar work.

Members can also access *Christian Counseling Today*, a publication that explores counseling from clinical and biblical perspectives.

For someone serving people every week, these resources create opportunities to keep learning rather than relying only on what they knew when they first entered the profession.

## Creating a Community Around Christian Counseling

Counseling can sometimes be isolating.

A professional may spend much of the day moving from one private conversation to another while carrying the responsibility that comes with helping people through deeply personal struggles.

AACC creates a broader professional community around that work.

Members can connect with other Christians who understand both the clinical responsibilities of mental healthcare and the spiritual convictions shaping why they entered the field.

Specialized divisions allow members to connect more deeply around areas of practice and ministry, while conferences and online communities create opportunities for relationships to develop across the profession.

That sense of connection reminds caregivers that they don't have to do their work alone.

## Taking Ethics Seriously

Good intentions aren't enough when you're caring for vulnerable people.

Christian counselors also need strong professional boundaries and ethical standards.

That's why AACC maintains a Christian Counseling Code of Ethics.

The code provides guidance for counselors and ministry leaders as they navigate responsibilities involving professional integrity, confidentiality, competence, client relationships, accountability, and other difficult situations that can arise in counseling.

Rather than treating ethics as separate from Christian faith, AACC approaches ethical care as part of faithfully serving another person.

## Helping Christians Care Well

AACC's reach goes beyond the traditional counseling office.

Pastors regularly sit across from people experiencing grief. Ministry leaders encounter marriages in crisis. Christian coaches help people navigate major life transitions. Lay caregivers may become the first person someone turns to when everything begins falling apart.

Not everyone serving in those roles is a licensed therapist.

But they still need wisdom.

That's why AACC's educational resources reach across professional counseling and everyday Christian caregiving.

The larger vision is to strengthen the people who are already strengthening others.

At the heart of the American Association of Christian Counselors is the belief that people deserve care that takes both professional excellence and Christian faith seriously. By equipping counselors, pastors, coaches, students, and caregivers, AACC helps Christians serve hurting people with greater wisdom, compassion, integrity, and hope.
