They need communities that can recover, become stronger, and build a more sustainable future. Working in more than 120 countries, the organization provides humanitarian relief and long-term development assistance to millions of people around the world. Its purpose is simple: to serve humanity so all may live as God intended. ADRA serves people regardless of their ethnicity, political affiliation, gender, or religious background, putting the Christian values of justice, compassion, and love into action wherever help is needed. ## A Global Humanitarian Ministry ADRA is connected to the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist community and its extensive network of churches, healthcare institutions, schools, and other organizations. That global presence gives ADRA an important advantage: people are already on the ground. Rather than approaching every community with the same solution, ADRA works alongside local communities, organizations, and governments to understand what people actually need. Programs can then be adapted to local cultures and circumstances while building the skills and resources communities need to create lasting change. This local approach is especially valuable during emergencies, when having established relationships and personnel nearby can help assistance reach people quickly. ## Fighting Poverty Through Lasting Change ADRA has been serving communities around the world since 1984. While emergency relief remains an important part of its work, ADRA also focuses on addressing some of the underlying conditions that contribute to poverty and vulnerability. The goal isn't simply to provide temporary assistance and leave. It's to help people develop healthier, safer, and more sustainable communities. ADRA concentrates much of this work within four major areas: health, education, livelihoods, and emergency response. ## Health Healthy people are essential to healthy communities. ADRA supports programs designed to improve health and well-being, particularly in communities where access to healthcare, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, or other basic resources may be limited. By strengthening community health, ADRA seeks to help families build a stronger foundation for the future. ## Education Education can open opportunities that poverty often closes. ADRA works to remove obstacles that prevent people from learning. By helping individuals and communities gain access to education, the organization seeks to give people knowledge and opportunities that can continue benefiting them long after a particular project ends. ## Livelihoods Sometimes helping a family means giving them the tools to provide for themselves. ADRA's livelihood programs help people develop more sustainable ways of earning income and supporting their families. Rather than creating long-term dependence on outside assistance, these efforts are designed to strengthen local capability and help communities become increasingly resilient. ## Emergency Response When disasters and humanitarian crises occur, immediate needs come first. ADRA provides emergency assistance while also helping communities begin the difficult process of recovery and rebuilding.
