# About Africa Centre for Apologetics Research

How do you recognize false teaching when it sounds almost like Christianity?

That's the kind of question the [Africa Centre for Apologetics Research](https://acfar.org/?ref=ministryy.com) (ACFAR) exists to help Christians answer.

Based in Kampala, Uganda, ACFAR is a Christian apologetics ministry dedicated to equipping believers across Africa with biblical discernment. Its work focuses especially on helping Christians identify, understand, and respond to cultic movements, aberrant Christian teachings, spiritual counterfeits, and other religious ideas that challenge the historic Christian faith.

Rather than simply telling Christians what to avoid, ACFAR wants believers to understand **why they believe what they believe** and how to respond to competing claims with confidence, wisdom, biblical truth, and compassion.

## Why ACFAR Exists

Across Africa, pastors and Christians encounter an enormous variety of religious movements and teachings.

Some use Christian terminology while departing from historic Christian doctrine. Others combine Christianity with traditional religious practices, occultism, superstition, or teachings imported from movements outside Africa.

Investigating every new group can be difficult, especially for pastors and ministry leaders who may not have access to specialized research or apologetics training.

ACFAR was established in Kampala in 2010 in response to this need.

Its mission is rooted in the Great Commission of Matthew 28 and the belief that making disciples includes helping Christians mature enough to distinguish biblical truth from error.

## Researching Spiritual Movements

Research is an important part of ACFAR's ministry.

The organization monitors and studies new and controversial religious movements, examining their beliefs, claims, practices, and use of Scripture.

Its research includes cultic movements, aberrant Christian groups and trends, occultism, syncretism, superstition, general apologetics, and world religions with significant followings in East Africa.

But research isn't intended to remain on a shelf.

ACFAR turns what it learns into practical resources Christians can actually use—helping believers understand a movement, compare its teachings with Scripture, answer its claims, and communicate the Gospel to people involved in it.

## Equipping the Church

ACFAR works with pastors, church leaders, seminary and Bible college students, Christian workers, lay believers, and students.

Through seminars, conferences, articles, videos, literature, apologetics notebooks, broadcasts, and online resources, the ministry helps Christians become better prepared to recognize questionable teachings and explain the Christian faith.

Its resources are also available in multiple languages, helping apologetics training reach Christians across different African contexts.

Campus ministry is another important part of this work. ACFAR equips students to think carefully about the religious claims they encounter and develop biblical discernment before accepting someone simply because they claim to speak for God.

## Truth With Compassion

For ACFAR, apologetics isn't supposed to be about winning arguments.

Christians should be able to identify and answer false teaching, but they should also remember that the people caught within deceptive movements are people who need the Gospel.

That's why ACFAR emphasizes both **apologetics and evangelism**.

The ministry encourages Christians to understand people's beliefs, answer their questions from Scripture and other relevant evidence, share the Gospel sensitively, and welcome those who come to Christ into healthy local church communities.

## Raising African Apologists

ACFAR also wants apologetics in Africa to be shaped by Christians who understand African churches, cultures, religious movements, and challenges firsthand.

Part of its mission is therefore to develop African apologists who can combine sound biblical reasoning with responses appropriate to their own cultural contexts.

The vision is bigger than answering one cult or correcting one false teaching.

It's about building stronger, more discerning churches.

**At the heart of the Africa Centre for Apologetics Research is a desire to help Christians know the truth deeply enough to recognize error, defend their faith confidently, and lovingly point people toward the Gospel of Jesus Christ.**
