# About Africa Inland Mission

More than a century ago, [Africa Inland Mission](https://aimint.org/?ref=ministryy.com) began with a desire to take the Gospel beyond Africa's coastlines and into places where Jesus was largely unknown.

That same calling continues today.

Africa Inland Mission (AIM) is an evangelical Christian mission organization focused on reaching African people who have some of the least access to the Gospel. Serving in more than 20 African nations and among African communities around the world, AIM partners with churches and missionaries to share the Gospel, make disciples, develop Christian leaders, and see Christ-centered churches established and thriving.

The places have changed since AIM began in 1895, but the heart of the mission remains: go where the Gospel has not yet taken root.

## Reaching Africa's Unreached

Christianity has grown tremendously across Africa, but that growth hasn't reached every community equally.

AIM says more than 300 million Africans still live among people without a viable witness to the Gospel. Some live in remote villages. Others are found in rapidly growing cities or communities where religious and cultural barriers make traditional missionary work difficult.

AIM intentionally focuses on these remaining gaps.

Missionaries enter communities as learners—building relationships, learning languages and cultures, sharing everyday life with people, and looking for meaningful opportunities to introduce them to Jesus.

The goal isn't simply to visit an unreached community. It's to see disciples made and local churches established that can eventually carry the Gospel forward themselves.

## Where It All Began

Africa Inland Mission's story begins with Peter Cameron Scott, a Scottish-American missionary with a vision for reaching the interior of Africa.

Scott imagined a network of mission stations stretching from the southeastern coast of Africa toward Lake Chad.

In August 1895, AIM's first missionary team departed for Africa. They reached the East African coast that October and began establishing mission stations in Kenya.

The early years were incredibly difficult. Scott died in 1896, and the young mission nearly collapsed as other workers died or resigned.

But the work continued.

From Kenya, AIM eventually expanded into Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, the Central African Republic, the islands of the Indian Ocean, and other parts of Africa.

## Making Disciples and Strengthening Churches

AIM's work today centers on more than sending missionaries from other parts of the world.

An increasingly important part of its mission is equipping and mobilizing African Christians themselves.

AIM works alongside African churches to train leaders, mobilize missionaries, and help local believers participate in reaching communities that still have little access to the Gospel.

This creates the potential for multiplication.

People hear about Jesus. Disciples are made. Churches grow. Leaders are trained. Those churches then send believers to reach other communities.

AIM also welcomes missionaries from many nations and cultures, reflecting its belief that the Great Commission belongs to the whole global Church.

## Beyond the Borders of Africa

For AIM, "Africa's unreached" no longer means only people living on the African continent.

Millions of Africans now live throughout Europe, North America, and other parts of the world. Some come from people groups that have historically been difficult for missionaries to reach within their home countries.

AIM's diaspora ministries follow these communities across borders, creating new opportunities for relationships and Gospel witness.

In a sense, the meaning of "inland" has changed.

The original inland was Africa's geographic interior. Today, AIM looks for the new inlands—wherever African people still have little opportunity to know Jesus.

At the heart of Africa Inland Mission is a vision to see the worship of Jesus spread among African peoples everywhere, as disciples are made, African believers are equipped, missionaries are sent, and Christ-centered churches take root where the Gospel has yet to be heard.
