# About Aging with Dignity

How would you want to be cared for if you became seriously ill and could no longer speak for yourself?

It's a difficult question, but [Aging with Dignity](https://agingwithdignity.org/?ref=ministryy.com) believes it's one families shouldn't have to answer for the first time during a crisis.

Aging with Dignity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting human dignity as people grow older and approach the end of life. Although it is not religiously affiliated, the organization is deeply faith-inspired, with its beginnings shaped by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her concern for the elderly, poor, sick, and vulnerable.

Its work helps individuals and families think ahead, communicate what matters most to them, and approach serious illness and the end of life with greater clarity, compassion, and peace.

## Inspired by Mother Teresa

Aging with Dignity was founded by attorney Jim Towey, who served for years as Mother Teresa's legal counsel and close advisor.

Through that relationship, Towey witnessed firsthand her care for people who were sick, dying, poor, isolated, or forgotten.

Mother Teresa encouraged him to defend human life and bring God's love and compassion to elderly people in need. That encouragement helped inspire what became Aging with Dignity.

The organization was founded in Florida in the 1990s and soon began developing resources that would eventually reach families throughout the United States.

## Five Wishes

Aging with Dignity is best known for Five Wishes, its advance care planning program.

Most advance directives naturally focus on important medical and legal decisions. Five Wishes goes further by helping people think about the personal, emotional, and spiritual sides of serious illness as well.

The document walks someone through five important areas: who should make healthcare decisions for them, what medical treatment they want, how comfortable they want to be, how they want other people to treat them, and what they want their loved ones to know.

That last part can make the conversation especially personal.

Five Wishes gives people an opportunity to communicate things that might otherwise go unsaid—from how they want to be remembered to messages of love, forgiveness, reconciliation, and faith.

More than 44 million copies have been distributed, and the resource is available in dozens of languages as well as Braille.

## Aging Is a Blessing

One of Aging with Dignity's central beliefs is that aging should be viewed as a blessing rather than a curse.

Growing older can bring vulnerability, dependence, illness, and difficult decisions, but the organization believes these realities never diminish someone's human worth.

Instead, the final season of life can still contain opportunities for relationships, spiritual growth, reconciliation, love, and leaving a meaningful legacy.

Aging with Dignity develops educational resources and programs to help older adults and their families prepare for these realities rather than fear or ignore them.

## Helping Families Finish Life With Confidence

Serious illness affects more than the patient.

Children, spouses, caregivers, doctors, nurses, and other loved ones may suddenly find themselves responsible for decisions they never expected to make.

Advance care planning gives families an opportunity to have those conversations beforehand.

When someone's wishes are clearly communicated, loved ones have a better understanding of the person's values and preferences if difficult medical decisions arise.

That's why Aging with Dignity views preparing for the end of life as more than paperwork.

It's an act of care for the people you love.

## Protecting Human Dignity

Aging with Dignity also advocates on issues affecting elderly, disabled, seriously ill, and other vulnerable people. Its work is grounded in the conviction that every person deserves compassionate care and respect for their human dignity throughout life.

Ultimately, its mission is about helping people prepare for something every family will eventually face.

At the heart of Aging with Dignity is the belief that every human life has value until its natural end—and that thoughtful preparation, compassionate care, meaningful relationships, and respect for each person's wishes can help people finish life surrounded by dignity and love.
