# About Aid to the Church in Need

What happens to a Christian community when its church is destroyed, its pastor is threatened, or its families are forced to flee their homes because of war or persecution?

[Aid to the Church in Need](https://www.churchinneed.org/?ref=ministryy.com) (ACN) exists to make sure those Christians know they haven't been forgotten.

ACN is an international Catholic charity and Pontifical Foundation dedicated to supporting Christians wherever they are persecuted, oppressed, or struggling to keep their faith alive. Working around the world, the ministry provides both spiritual and material assistance to local churches facing persecution, violence, displacement, poverty, and other serious hardships.

Its mission brings together three simple actions: information, prayer, and charity.

## Born From a Church in Need

Aid to the Church in Need began in the aftermath of World War II.

In 1947, at the request of Pope Pius XII, Father Werenfried van Straaten began collecting assistance for displaced Germans, including thousands of priests who were trying to minister among refugees.

One of the ministry's earliest creative solutions became known as the "chapel truck campaign." Buses and trucks were converted into mobile chapels so priests could bring pastoral care and the sacraments to displaced Catholics.

From those beginnings in postwar Europe, ACN's mission gradually expanded.

It began supporting persecuted Christians behind the Iron Curtain and later extended its work into Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Today, the ministry supports thousands of projects around the world each year.

## Keeping the Faith Alive

ACN's assistance isn't limited to one type of project because the needs of suffering churches can look very different.

In one community, Christians may need emergency assistance after violence forces families from their homes.

Somewhere else, a congregation may need help rebuilding a church destroyed by war.

A priest serving remote villages may need transportation. Seminarians may need assistance completing their formation. Religious sisters may need basic financial support so they can continue caring for the people around them.

ACN also supports Bibles and religious literature, catechesis, media ministries, pastoral centers, Mass stipends, formation programs, and other resources that help local churches continue their mission.

The common thread is simple: strengthen the Church where following Christ is especially difficult.

## Standing With Persecuted Christians

Persecution is a major part of ACN's mission.

The organization supports Christians experiencing violence, discrimination, displacement, and restrictions on religious freedom while also raising awareness about what persecuted believers are experiencing.

That means ACN serves as more than a source of financial assistance.

It also seeks to give suffering Christians a voice.

By sharing their stories, documenting their circumstances, and connecting Christians around the world through prayer and practical support, ACN reminds persecuted communities that they belong to a much larger Body of Christ.

## Prayer and Practical Help

ACN sees prayer and material assistance as belonging together.

Donors aren't simply funding projects. They're invited to pray for the priests, religious sisters, seminarians, catechists, families, and Christian communities their generosity supports.

This creates a bridge between Christians who have resources to give and Christians trying to keep the faith alive under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

## One Church Supporting Another

Since 1947, Aid to the Church in Need has grown from helping displaced Christians in postwar Europe into a worldwide ministry supporting the suffering Church.

Yet the heart behind the work remains remarkably similar.

When one part of the Church suffers, another part can respond.

At the heart of Aid to the Church in Need is the conviction that persecuted and suffering Christians should never have to stand alone—and through prayer, advocacy, pastoral assistance, and practical aid, the worldwide Church can help them keep the faith alive.
