# About Alpha

Maybe you believe in God but aren't sure what you believe about Jesus.

Maybe you haven't been inside a church in years.

Or maybe you have questions about Christianity that you've never felt comfortable asking out loud.

[Alpha](https://alpha.org/?ref=ministryy.com) was created for conversations like those.

Alpha is a Christian evangelism ministry that helps local churches create welcoming spaces where people can explore Christianity for themselves. Rather than assuming someone already understands the Bible or knows how church works, Alpha starts with the questions people are actually asking about life, faith, God, and meaning.

You don't have to arrive with the right answers.

You can simply come with questions.

## A Place Where Questions Are Welcome

Walking into a church can feel intimidating when you're unfamiliar with Christianity.

Alpha tries to make that first step easier.

An Alpha typically takes place over a number of weeks. People gather together, often share food, watch a talk about the Christian faith, and then spend time discussing what they've heard.

That's where Alpha becomes different from simply attending another class.

Conversation matters.

People are encouraged to share what they actually think rather than giving the answer they assume everyone wants to hear. Someone can agree with what they've heard, question it, wrestle with it, or simply listen to everyone else.

The purpose is to create an environment where honest conversations about Christianity can happen naturally.

## Exploring the Big Questions of Christianity

As the weeks continue, Alpha gradually introduces participants to the central message of Christianity.

The conversations explore who Jesus is and why Christians believe His death matters. Participants consider faith, prayer, Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and what following Jesus actually looks like in everyday life.

But the course isn't designed simply to transfer information.

Alpha ultimately wants people to encounter Jesus.

That evangelistic purpose has remained at the center of the ministry even as the way Alpha is presented has changed over the years.

## From One Church to a Global Movement

Alpha began at Holy Trinity Brompton, an Anglican church in London, in 1977.

It originally served as a course for Christians, but Nicky Gumbel began leading Alpha in 1990 and repositioned it for people outside the church.

Something started happening.

People came.

As participation at HTB grew, leaders from other churches became interested in using the same approach in their own congregations. More than 1,000 church leaders attended the first Alpha conference at HTB in 1993.

From there, Alpha began spreading internationally.

Today, millions of people around the world have experienced Alpha, and its materials have been translated into more than 100 languages.

## Built for the Local Church

One of the most important things about Alpha is that it isn't trying to replace the local church.

It's designed to work through it.

Churches can run Alpha in their own communities and invite people who might never otherwise attend a traditional church service.

That also means Alpha can look slightly different depending on where it's happening. A conversation in London won't necessarily look exactly like one in Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the United States.

The setting can change while the invitation remains remarkably simple:

Come explore Christianity with us.

## Helping a New Generation Ask Questions

As culture has changed, Alpha has continued adapting how those conversations happen.

The Alpha Film Series presents the course through modern video teaching designed for a global audience, while the Alpha Youth Series creates a version specifically intended to engage younger people in conversations about life, faith, and Jesus.

The format may evolve, but Alpha continues returning to the same idea that helped it spread beyond one London church decades ago.

People need somewhere they can honestly explore the Christian faith.

At the heart of Alpha is an invitation: come as you are, bring the questions you actually have, explore the Christian faith in community, and discover for yourself who Jesus is and what following Him could mean for your life.

[Alpha — Explore FaithAlpha helps people unpack the Christian faith in an open, no pressure environment, supporting churches around the world with free resources and engaging talks.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/24/d5/24d5d8e2-e840-471b-ac6c-29e74e44dc3e/content/images/icon/favicon-744810e5-de56-406a-a291-d1b7d1de0097.png)AlphaReach![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/24/d5/24d5d8e2-e840-471b-ac6c-29e74e44dc3e/content/images/thumbnail/Website-Assets-eaa22ad8-6c95-4b5b-af47-ab10b9a72b1d.jpg)](https://alpha.org/?ref=ministryy.com)
