# About the American Scientific Affiliation

Does being serious about science mean you have to become less serious about your Christian faith?

The [American Scientific Affiliation](https://network.asa3.org/?ref=ministryy.com) believes the answer is no.

The American Scientific Affiliation is an international community of Christians working in science, bringing people together who want to study God's creation.

For the scientist who sometimes feels caught between two worlds, the ASA creates another possibility.

You don't have to leave your scientific questions outside the church.

And you don't have to leave your faith outside the laboratory.

## Where Faith and Science Meet

The ASA begins with the conviction that studying the natural world and believing in the God who created it don't have to be competing pursuits.

Science helps us investigate how the universe works.

Christian theology asks questions that reach beyond what scientific investigation alone can answer.

The ASA creates space for those conversations to meet.

Its members explore questions surrounding origins, biology, physics, medicine, technology, psychology, environmental stewardship, artificial intelligence, and other areas where scientific discoveries intersect with Christian thought.

Sometimes those conversations produce agreement.

Sometimes they don't.

And the ASA believes that's okay.

## A Place Where Christians Can Disagree

One of the more distinctive parts of the ASA is what it doesn't try to do.

It isn't an advocacy organization built around defending one predetermined position on every disputed scientific question.

Instead, members share foundational Christian convictions while recognizing that Christians who take both Scripture and science seriously can sometimes interpret difficult questions differently.

That creates room for genuine discussion.

Someone can present research. Another Christian scientist can challenge the conclusions. The conversation can continue without either person being treated as though asking difficult questions somehow threatens Christianity.

The ASA wants those disagreements handled with humility, careful scholarship, Christian love, and a genuine desire to discover truth.

## A Community for Christians in Science

Working in science can sometimes feel isolating for Christians.

You may be surrounded by colleagues who understand your research but don't understand your faith.

Then you walk into church and find people who understand your faith but have little familiarity with the scientific questions occupying much of your professional life.

The ASA brings those worlds together.

Through local chapters, professional connections, online discussions, field-specific groups, and an annual meeting, Christians in scientific disciplines can meet others navigating similar questions.

Students and early-career scientists can also connect with people further along in their fields, creating opportunities for mentorship and encouragement.

It's not simply a place to discuss ideas.

It's a community.

## Taking the Conversation Deeper

The ASA also gives Christians opportunities to explore faith and science at a scholarly level.

Its peer-reviewed journal, *Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith*, publishes research and discussion dealing with the relationship between scientific knowledge and Christian theology.

The organization's archives stretch back decades, giving readers access to generations of Christian engagement with scientific questions.

Its *God and Nature* publication makes additional discussions available in a more accessible format, while conferences, lectures, webinars, and online resources allow people to continue exploring specific subjects.

Churches can also use ASA resources when difficult scientific questions arise within their own congregations.

## More Than 80 Years of Asking Questions

The ASA was founded in 1941 after Christian leaders recognized a growing challenge.

Students were encountering scientific ideas that sometimes appeared to conflict with what they had been taught about Christianity.

Rather than telling students to avoid science, a small group of Christian scientists came together to investigate the questions seriously.

Five scientists attended the founding meeting.

From those beginnings grew an international network that has spent more than eight decades exploring the relationship between Christian faith and scientific discovery.

The questions have changed dramatically since 1941.

The commitment to exploring them hasn't.

## Studying Creation Without Fearing Discovery

Underlying the ASA's work is a Christian understanding of why scientific investigation is possible in the first place.

God created an ordered and intelligible universe.

That means Christians don't need to fear learning more about it.

Discovery can inspire deeper questions. Difficult evidence can cause Christians to reconsider interpretations. Scientific advances can create new ethical responsibilities.

Through it all, the ASA encourages Christians to pursue truth faithfully while remembering that scientific knowledge should ultimately be used for the good of humanity and God's creation.

At the heart of the American Scientific Affiliation is the conviction that Christians don't have to choose between serious faith and serious science. They can ask difficult questions, follow evidence carefully, disagree with humility, study God's creation with wonder, and allow both Scripture and the natural world to deepen their pursuit of truth.
