# About Avant Ministries

The goal isn't for the missionary to remain at the center forever. It's for a healthy local church to take root and eventually stand on its own. That vision has driven [Avant Ministries](https://avantministries.org/?ref=ministryy.com) for more than 130 years as it sends missionaries into parts of the world where relatively few people have access to the Gospel. Avant focuses especially on communities where less than two percent of the population is evangelical Christian. Missionaries enter those places to share Christ and make disciples, but the work is ultimately moving toward something bigger: a mature church led by local believers that can eventually reproduce and carry the Gospel farther than the original missionaries ever could.

## Go Where the Church Isn't

There are places where someone can grow up surrounded by churches.

Avant is concerned about the places where that's not true.

The ministry reports that more than three billion people have seldom or never heard the name of Jesus, with thousands of people groups still considered unreached.

Those communities shape where Avant wants to go.

Its missionaries currently serve in nearly 50 countries, often crossing significant cultural and linguistic boundaries to live among people who may have little previous exposure to Christianity.

Getting there, however, is only the beginning.

The real work happens through relationships.

Missionaries learn how people communicate and begin sharing the Gospel within a culture very different from their own.

Over time, people believe.

Disciples begin gathering.

And something that didn't exist before starts taking shape.

A local church.

## Plant a Church That Doesn't Need You

That may be one of the clearest ways to understand Avant's missionary philosophy.

Success isn't creating a congregation permanently dependent upon foreign missionaries.

Avant wants the churches it helps establish to mature.

Scripture becomes their authority.

Believers learn to disciple other believers.

Qualified local elders emerge.

Leadership gradually moves into the hands of national Christians.

Eventually, missionaries are no longer necessary for the church to function.

In fact, one of Avant's characteristics of a healthy church is governance that operates independently of missionaries.

That's an important milestone.

It means Christianity hasn't remained something imported from somewhere else.

The church has become genuinely rooted within the community.

## Then Let the Church Multiply

Independence isn't the final destination either.

A healthy church begins looking outward.

The people who were once unreached become the people reaching others.

Disciples make new disciples.

Local believers recognize neighboring communities that still don't have churches.

Eventually, one congregation can become two.

Then those churches can continue reproducing.

Avant's vision is therefore bigger than individual conversions or even individual church plants.

It wants to see vibrant, healthy, multiplying churches established among cultures where they previously didn't exist.

The missionary helps begin something that local Christians can carry forward.

## Missionaries Don't Go Alone

Even when someone moves across the world, missions remains connected to the church that sent them.

Avant works closely with local congregations that want to participate directly in reaching unreached communities.

One expression of that partnership is its Joint Venture model.

Instead of a church simply financially supporting a missionary it barely knows, a congregation can become actively involved in forming and sending a church-planting team.

Avant brings its cross-cultural experience alongside the church.

Responsibility is shared.

The sending church remains involved with its missionaries while Avant provides the structure and field experience needed to help them serve effectively.

It's partnership rather than outsourcing.

## Finding New Ways Into Difficult Places

Not every unreached community can be approached in exactly the same way.

Some places welcome traditional missionaries.

Others don't.

That requires creativity.

Avant missionaries may serve through business or other professional skills that allow them to build genuine relationships within communities where conventional missionary work would be difficult.

The method can adapt because the purpose remains steady.

Enter the community faithfully.

Live among people.

Share Christ.

Make disciples.

Help a church take root.

Avant describes creativity as one of its defining values because reaching people across cultures often requires thoughtful approaches rather than repeating the same missionary model everywhere.

## A Mission That Started in Kansas

Avant's story stretches back to 1892, when George S. Fisher and other Christian leaders in Kansas formed the World's Gospel Union.

Their conviction was that the Gospel needed to go wherever Christ was not yet known.

The organization later became Gospel Missionary Union and eventually took the name Avant Ministries in 2003.

Its missionaries were among the early evangelical workers entering places such as Ecuador and Mali.

Some translated Scripture into languages spoken by communities with little access to the Bible.

Others planted churches.

Some paid an enormous price.

Avant missionary Roger Youderian was one of the five missionaries killed in Ecuador in 1956 while attempting to establish contact with the Waodani people.

Generations later, the ministry is still pursuing the conviction that sent those early missionaries outward.

Go where Christ isn't known.

But don't build the mission around yourself.

Plant something that can remain after you're gone.

## Every Culture Worshiping God

That's ultimately the future Avant wants to see.

A missionary enters an unreached community.

Someone hears the Gospel.

That person follows Jesus.

Believers begin gathering.

A church forms.

Local leaders emerge.

Missionary leadership becomes unnecessary.

Then the new church begins asking where it should go next.

The missionary movement has multiplied.

At the heart of Avant Ministries is the desire to see the Gospel become deeply rooted in places where the Church barely exists. By working alongside the global Church to send missionaries into unreached communities, Avant seeks to establish something designed to outlast the missionaries themselves: healthy local churches led by local believers who can make disciples, raise up leaders, plant more churches, and eventually carry the Gospel into places that are still waiting to hear.
