# About BEAMS

Imagine becoming a Christian and not owning a Bible.

You heard the Gospel through a missionary or local pastor. You want to understand more about Jesus and begin growing in your faith.

But there isn't a Bible sitting on your nightstand.

Buying one isn't a simple trip to a bookstore. A Bible in your language may be difficult to find, and even if copies are available, the cost can be significant compared with what your family earns.

BEAMS exists for that moment.

Bible Education and Missionary Service—better known as BEAMS—helps missionaries around the world put complete, hardback Bibles into the hands of believers who need them.

Its mission can be summarized in one memorable phrase:

“Sending the WHOLE BIBLE to the WHOLE WORLD!”

## The Need Became Clear on the Mission Field

The story behind BEAMS begins with Dr. Julian Pope.

Pope had spent decades in missionary service and understood something that can easily be overlooked when Christians think about evangelism.

Leading someone to Christ is the beginning.

That person then needs to grow.

In 1970, Pope began the Precious Seed Ministry through Baptist Tabernacle in Shreveport, Louisiana, with the purpose of providing Scripture to missionaries overseas.

Two years later, he founded BEAMS.

The work expanded beyond simply sending literature. BEAMS became involved in missions conferences, Bible courses, evangelistic campaigns, Bible seminars, and supplying missionaries with Christian resources.

Eventually, one need became especially important.

Complete Bibles.

## Not Just a Portion of Scripture

Many ministries do valuable work printing Gospel tracts, Scripture portions, and New Testaments.

BEAMS recognized another need alongside them.

Missionaries were asking for the entire Bible.

A new believer might first encounter Jesus through the Gospel of John or receive a New Testament after conversion.

But discipleship eventually moves beyond those pages.

Genesis matters.

Psalms matters.

Isaiah matters.

Romans matters.

Revelation matters.

BEAMS therefore developed a particularly focused ministry: providing whole, hardback Bibles that missionaries can give to believers without charging them.

The hardback format is intentional.

A Bible used regularly in difficult conditions needs to last.

## The Missionary Knows Where the Bible Needs to Go

BEAMS doesn't try to become the local ministry in every country it serves.

Instead, it works through missionaries and national pastors who are already there.

They understand the communities.

They know the churches.

They meet the new believers.

They can identify where Scripture is needed most.

BEAMS handles another part of the journey.

From its headquarters in Gulfport, Mississippi, the ministry coordinates Bible inventory, financial support, packing, and shipping. Churches and individual Christians provide the funds that make the process possible.

Then boxes begin moving.

The Bible might leave Mississippi and eventually arrive with a missionary serving thousands of miles away.

From there, it reaches the person it was intended for.

## Eight Dollars Can Travel a Long Way

BEAMS makes the connection between donor and recipient unusually tangible.

The ministry currently estimates that an $8 donation can provide one Bible.

That makes participation easy to picture.

Eight dollars isn't simply disappearing into a large organizational budget.

It can become a physical copy of Scripture.

A church can provide multiple Bibles. Individuals can give one in honor or memory of someone. Congregations can support missionaries regularly, while special projects help meet requests that go beyond the ministry's normal distribution.

BEAMS also invites groups to visit its headquarters and help pack Bibles for shipment.

Suddenly worldwide missions becomes something you can hold in your hands.

You pack the Bible.

Someone else ships it.

A missionary receives it.

And eventually a believer opens it.

## Churches Make the Ministry Possible

BEAMS has always maintained strong ties to local churches, particularly independent Baptist congregations.

Rather than treating churches primarily as an audience for fundraising, the ministry sees them as participants in getting Scripture onto mission fields.

Its missionaries travel throughout the United States sharing the need for Bibles and inviting congregations into the work.

Since 2000, BEAMS has also held an annual Bible Day.

Churches use the occasion to emphasize the importance of Scripture while raising money for Bible distribution.

A congregation may never send its own missionary to every country represented by BEAMS.

Through Bible distribution, however, that church can still place resources into the hands of missionaries already serving there.

## From Fifty Bibles to Millions

BEAMS' growth gives some perspective on how large that cooperation has become.

In 1997, the ministry was supplying roughly 50 Bibles each month and working with only a small number of missionaries.

Over time, the operation expanded dramatically.

Today, BEAMS reports serving thousands of missionaries and national workers throughout its broader history and reaching countries around the world.

More than 2.3 million Bibles have been sent.

Each one represents the same basic idea that motivated the ministry decades ago.

Someone needs God's Word.

A missionary knows that person.

A church can help provide the Bible.

BEAMS connects them.

## A Bible Can Keep Teaching After the Missionary Leaves

Perhaps the greatest strength of Scripture distribution is what happens after the handoff.

The missionary doesn't have to remain in the room.

The Bible does.

A new believer can read it tomorrow.

A pastor can use it while preparing to preach.

Parents can read it with their children.

A Christian can return to the same pages during grief, temptation, confusion, or joy.

Years later, that Bible may still be teaching.

That's why BEAMS puts so much energy into something as straightforward as sending books in boxes.

They aren't simply shipping books.

They're placing the Word of God into the hands of people who want to know Him.

At the heart of BEAMS is the conviction that hearing the Gospel should not leave a new believer without the Scriptures needed to grow. By bringing churches, donors, missionaries, and national pastors together, BEAMS turns financial gifts into complete Bibles that can travel across oceans, enter homes and churches, and remain long after the box they arrived in has disappeared—helping put the whole Bible into the hands of people around the world.
