# About Bethany Christian Services

Bethany Christian Services began with one baby girl who needed somewhere safe to go.

In 1944, friends Marguerite Bonnema and Mary DeBoer opened their home to care for her. Five more babies followed over the next several months, and what began as a simple act of Christian hospitality gradually revealed a much larger calling.

More than 80 years later, Bethany has become one of the largest Christian child and family organizations in the United States.

The scale is dramatically different, but the idea behind the ministry remains surprisingly close to that first open door: when a child or family is facing a crisis, Christians have an opportunity to step closer.

## The Best Place for a Child

Early in Bethany's history, its leaders came to an important conclusion.

Children needed more than institutions could provide.

They needed families.

That realization moved Bethany toward adoption, and in 1951 the organization became a licensed adoption agency. Twenty-five children were placed with families during that first year.

Adoption would eventually become one of the ministries most closely associated with the Bethany name.

But decades of working with vulnerable children also taught the organization something else.

Sometimes finding a new family is necessary.

Sometimes helping the existing family become stronger is the better answer.

That distinction has significantly shaped what Bethany is today.

## Protect the Child by Strengthening the Family

Imagine a parent who genuinely loves their children but is suddenly overwhelmed by circumstances.

Housing becomes unstable. A personal crisis removes the support system they depended on. Parenting becomes harder under financial pressure, and what started as a difficult season begins threatening the stability of the entire household.

Removing a child doesn't necessarily solve the underlying problem.

Bethany increasingly works upstream.

Through family preservation and strengthening services, the organization helps parents build stability so children can remain safely connected to their families whenever possible.

Parents can receive practical support and education while families work through challenges with people walking beside them.

If a child does enter foster care, reunification can still remain the goal when returning home can happen safely.

The focus isn't simply keeping families together at any cost.

It's creating the conditions where children can thrive.

## When Another Family Needs to Step In

There are circumstances where a child needs another safe home.

That's where foster families become part of the story.

Bethany recruits, prepares, and supports adults willing to welcome children during seasons of uncertainty.

Fostering requires a particular kind of love because the objective may eventually be saying goodbye.

A foster parent can become deeply attached to a child while still supporting the work being done to reunite that child with a birth family.

When reunification isn't possible, Bethany helps pursue other forms of lasting connection, including adoption.

The destination can vary.

The child remains at the center.

## Walking With Mothers Before a Decision Is Made

Bethany's work with children also brings it alongside women experiencing unexpected pregnancies.

Rather than reducing that moment to a single decision, pregnancy counselors help expectant mothers understand their circumstances and consider what comes next.

For some women, that means making a plan to parent.

Others may consider adoption.

Bethany's role is to provide counseling and support while recognizing the dignity of both mother and unborn child.

That reflects a principle running throughout the organization: difficult circumstances deserve thoughtful care rather than quick assumptions about what someone's future should look like.

## Finding Home After Losing One

The meaning of family becomes especially powerful when someone has been forced to leave everything familiar behind.

Bethany has served refugees and immigrants for decades.

A refugee arriving in the United States may need far more than transportation from an airport. Everyday tasks become unfamiliar when you're learning a new language and navigating a completely different culture.

Bethany helps families begin rebuilding that sense of stability.

The work becomes even more important for children who arrive without parents.

Unaccompanied refugee minors need safe adults around them while they adjust to enormous changes and begin building a future in an unfamiliar country.

For Bethany, welcoming them isn't disconnected from its Christian identity.

Scripture's call to care for the foreigner sits alongside its call to care for vulnerable children.

## Why the Name Bethany Matters

The organization's name carries its own picture of what this ministry is supposed to be.

In the Gospels, Bethany was the village where Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived.

Jesus went there.

He was welcomed into a home, surrounded by friends, and given a place of rest away from the crowds.

Bethany's founders wanted the organization they were creating to carry that same spirit of refuge.

The circumstances are different today.

A foster child may need refuge from instability. A struggling parent may need support before a crisis separates the family. A refugee family may be trying to make an unfamiliar city feel like home.

The expression changes.

The welcome remains.

## Professional Care Motivated by Christian Faith

Bethany doesn't see Christian compassion and professional social services as competing approaches.

It intentionally brings them together.

Its programs are informed by research and decades of experience working with children and families. Social workers, counselors, caseworkers, foster families, churches, and community partners each contribute something different.

Behind that professional structure is an explicitly Christian reason for doing the work.

Bethany believes children are created in the image of God.

That gives them dignity before anyone determines what services they need.

Its mission is to demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families.

Sometimes that love looks remarkably similar to the way the ministry began.

A vulnerable child needs somewhere safe.

A Christian opens the door.

And suddenly that child isn't facing the crisis alone.

At the heart of Bethany Christian Services is the belief that children belong in safe, loving relationships. What began with two women welcoming one vulnerable baby has grown into a nationwide Christian ministry surrounding children with families, helping struggling parents become stronger, walking alongside young people, and welcoming those seeking refuge. Programs have changed throughout Bethany's history, but the vision behind them continues to point toward the same destination: children and families who are safe, loved, and connected.
