# About Cafe 1040

A young Christian can sincerely say, "I think God may be calling me to missions," and still have no idea what to do next.

Should they move overseas?

Which country?

Which mission agency?

Do they need seminary?

How do they raise support?

Can they handle learning another language?

What does everyday missionary life actually look like once the excitement of the mission trip wears off?

Those aren't small questions.

Cafe 1040 was created for the space between feeling the pull toward missions and being ready to commit your life to it.

Its answer is refreshingly practical.

Come see.

## There's a Gap Between a Mission Trip and Becoming a Missionary

A short-term trip can awaken something.

You encounter another culture.

Meet people who see the world differently.

Watch missionaries serve.

Perhaps you share the Gospel personally for the first time.

Then the trip ends.

Two years of missionary service sits at the opposite end of the spectrum.

That's a much bigger commitment for someone still trying to determine whether cross-cultural missions is where God is leading them.

Cafe 1040 recognized the missing middle.

Its primary response became an overseas missions mentorship designed to give young adults enough time and proximity to experience missionary life more realistically.

The goal isn't to pressure someone into becoming a missionary.

It's to give them enough experience to seek clarity.

## Don't Just Study Missions From America

Cafe 1040 believes part of discerning missionary calling happens by getting close enough to the reality of missions to experience it.

Participants live overseas alongside experienced missionaries.

Daily life introduces lessons a classroom can describe but cannot completely reproduce.

You're surrounded by another language.

Social expectations are different.

Food is different.

Religion may shape everyday life in unfamiliar ways.

Ordinary errands require more thought.

Relationships take patience.

Sharing Jesus requires listening carefully enough to understand the person and culture in front of you.

The romantic picture of missions begins giving way to something more useful:

reality.

And that's precisely the point.

## Learn Where the Need Is Greatest

The number in Cafe 1040's name points toward the 10/40 Window.

Stretching broadly across North Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia, this region contains a large concentration of the world's unreached people groups.

These aren't simply places with fewer Christians.

Cafe 1040 is particularly concerned with communities where meaningful access to the Gospel can be extremely limited.

A person might live their entire life without personally knowing a follower of Jesus.

There may be few churches nearby—or none within their own cultural and linguistic community.

Christian resources may be difficult to find.

That imbalance shaped Cafe 1040 from the beginning.

If missionaries are going to be mobilized, the ministry believes special attention should be given to the places where the story of Jesus remains least accessible.

## Let Missionary Life Become Ordinary for a While

Participants aren't sent overseas merely to observe missionaries from a distance.

They're mentored through the rhythms involved in cross-cultural life.

Language learning becomes part of the experience.

So does understanding local history and religion.

Students learn about sharing the Gospel across cultures while growing in their own discipleship.

They experience team life and begin recognizing how their personality, abilities, weaknesses, expectations, and spiritual maturity affect the way they serve.

Those lessons matter because long-term missions involves considerably more than evangelistic moments.

Missionaries still have difficult mornings.

Team disagreements.

Homesickness.

Confusing cultural interactions.

Language mistakes.

Ordinary responsibilities.

The question isn't simply whether someone enjoys international travel.

It's whether they can imagine faithfully building a life there.

## Your Career Doesn't Necessarily Compete With Missions

One of the assumptions Cafe 1040 helps challenge is that missionary calling belongs to one narrow personality or profession.

A young adult may love medicine.

Business.

Teaching.

Engineering.

Art.

Technology.

Counseling.

Sports.

Hospitality.

Their first instinct may be to separate those interests from missions.

Cafe 1040 encourages participants to consider how their skills, passions, talents, and abilities might contribute to God's mission among unreached peoples.

Cross-cultural ministry needs different kinds of people.

The question becomes less about fitting a stereotypical missionary mold and more about discovering how God might use the person He's already shaping you to become.

## The Local Church Still Matters

Cafe 1040 doesn't position itself as a replacement for the church.

It wants churches involved in missionary mobilization.

The organization partners with congregations by providing missions coaching, small-group studies, speakers, resources, short-term trip support, connections with mission organizations, and immersive missions experiences.

That creates an important bridge.

A church may have a college student saying, "I think God might be calling me overseas."

The pastor wants to encourage them.

But the church may not have a missionary training program of its own.

Cafe 1040 can help that young adult explore the next step while keeping the local church connected to the journey.

## Clarity Can Mean Yes—or No

A missions mentorship shouldn't be considered successful only when someone comes home determined to become a missionary.

Sometimes clarity means recognizing that long-term overseas work isn't the right calling.

That's valuable too.

Someone can return with a deeper understanding of unreached peoples and spend the rest of their life praying, giving, mobilizing others, supporting missionaries, welcoming international neighbors, or helping their church become more engaged in global missions.

Another participant comes home unable to imagine doing anything else.

They begin pursuing a sending agency.

Training.

Support raising.

Long-term placement.

The important thing is that the decision is now grounded in experience rather than imagination alone.

## Turn Interest Into a Next Step

Cafe 1040 began because its founder discovered an enormous missions problem and then witnessed thousands of college students express a desire to be part of the solution.

The desire was there.

The missing piece was a pathway.

More than two decades later, that's still where Cafe 1040 positions itself.

Not primarily as the organization that sends someone overseas for the rest of their life.

As the bridge that helps them determine whether they should go.

A young Christian arrives with a question.

They live among another culture.

Walk beside missionaries.

Learn.

Struggle.

Pray.

Serve.

Share Jesus.

And eventually come home better prepared to answer it.

At the heart of Cafe 1040 is a desire to help the next generation move from simply caring about the Great Commission to discovering their own place within it. By placing young adults alongside experienced missionaries among peoples with little or no access to the Gospel, the ministry gives them space to experience cross-cultural life before making a long-term commitment. They learn language and culture, encounter different religions, practice sharing Jesus, grow as disciples, and discover how their own gifts could serve God's mission. Cafe 1040 isn't simply asking young Christians whether they care about the unreached. It's helping them find out whether God may be calling them to build their lives among them.
