# About Central Union Mission

**Central Union Mission** is a Christian ministry serving people experiencing homelessness and poverty throughout the Washington, D.C. region. Since 1884, the Mission has combined practical assistance with the Gospel, helping people meet immediate needs while working toward a more stable future.

Its ministry is built around a simple conviction: people in crisis need more than temporary relief. A meal or a safe bed can address tonight's problem, but lasting change may also require employment, healthy relationships, recovery support, and spiritual renewal.

## Serving Washington Since 1884

Central Union Mission began when a group of Christians responded to homeless Civil War veterans living in Washington, D.C. What started as an effort to care for men who had returned from war eventually developed into a much broader ministry to people facing homelessness and poverty.

More than 140 years later, Central Union Mission describes itself as the oldest private social service agency in Washington, D.C. Its Christian purpose has remained central throughout that history.

The Mission states that its purpose is to glorify God by proclaiming the Gospel, leading people to Christ, developing disciples, and serving hurting people throughout the Washington metropolitan area.

## A Place for Men to Begin Again

Central Union Mission operates an emergency shelter for men at its Massachusetts Avenue location in Washington.

Men can receive a safe place to sleep and meals when they are experiencing homelessness. The shelter can accommodate up to 170 men each night.

The Mission also helps men address the circumstances that contributed to homelessness. Its longer-term programs provide opportunities for recovery and personal development while helping participants prepare for independent living.

Christian discipleship is integrated into this process. Bible studies, counseling, chapel services, and Christian community give participants opportunities to address their spiritual lives alongside their practical needs.

## Helping People Return to Work

Employment can be one of the biggest barriers between homelessness and long-term stability. Central Union Mission therefore makes workforce development an important part of its ministry.

Participants can receive help with education and job preparation. Programs include GED preparation and literacy instruction as well as paid work experiences.

One example is **Mission Muffins**, where men overcoming homelessness receive hands-on employment training. Participants learn baking and customer service while earning income and developing a work history.

The purpose is not simply to keep participants busy. Central Union Mission wants people to develop the skills and confidence needed to support themselves.

## Supporting Women and Families

Central Union Mission also serves women and children through its Comprehensive Family Resource Center.

Families facing poverty can receive groceries and clothing while also accessing services designed to improve their long-term circumstances. Parents can participate in budgeting or parenting classes, and adults can receive educational and employment assistance.

This allows the Mission to intervene before a difficult financial situation becomes even more severe.

The organization also distributes large quantities of food throughout the region. It reports providing more than 300,000 bags of groceries annually.

## Christ at the Center

Central Union Mission is explicitly evangelical in its Christian identity.

Its statement of faith affirms the inspiration of Scripture and the deity of Jesus Christ. It teaches His virgin birth, death on the cross, bodily resurrection, and future return.

The Mission also teaches that salvation is received by grace through faith in Christ rather than through works.

These beliefs directly shape its approach to serving people. Central Union Mission does not view spiritual care as something separate from its social services. Its stated goal is to help people encounter the Gospel while receiving the practical support they need.

This is what distinguishes the Mission from a secular homeless shelter.

## Meeting Immediate Needs While Pursuing Lasting Change

Central Union Mission provides food and shelter because people in crisis need immediate help. But it does not want emergency assistance to become the end of the relationship.

The larger goal is restoration.

A person who arrives needing a meal may eventually need help finding work. Someone staying in the shelter may need support overcoming addiction or preparing for permanent housing. Another person may need Christian community after years of isolation.

Central Union Mission tries to walk with people through that larger process.

Its ministry reflects the belief that every person has dignity because they are made in God's image. Serving someone in crisis therefore means caring about where that person's life goes after the immediate crisis has passed.

Central Union Mission is a Christ-centered homeless and poverty ministry that has served the Washington, D.C. region since 1884\. It provides immediate help through shelter and food while creating opportunities for people to move toward employment and stable housing. Throughout that work, the Mission remains intentionally evangelical, using practical service as an opportunity to demonstrate Christian love and help people discover lasting hope in Jesus Christ.
