About Alas de Socorro del Ecuador

In Ecuador's Amazon region, getting from one community to another isn't always as simple as getting in a car.

Dense rainforest, rivers, mountains, and limited roads can make communities that look close on a map incredibly difficult to reach on the ground.

That's where Alas de Socorro del Ecuador (ADSE) comes in.

Based in Shell, Ecuador, Alas de Socorro uses aviation to connect people and organizations with some of the country's harder-to-reach places. Its work includes missionary support, humanitarian and development flights, passenger and cargo transportation, and aviation maintenance.

Behind those practical services is a Christian heritage stretching back decades and a continuing desire to use aviation in service of the people of Ecuador.

A Mission Aviation Legacy

The story of Alas de Socorro reaches back to 1948, when Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) began working in Ecuador under the name "Alas de Socorro."

Ecuador was one of MAF's earliest mission fields, and missionary pilot Nate Saint and his family established a base in Shell.

Over time, however, a new vision began developing: what if the aviation ministry could transition from an internationally operated mission into an Ecuadorian organization?

In 1985, Ecuadorian and international Christians began formally working toward that goal. Alas de Socorro del Ecuador was legally established the following year.

The transition took years to complete, but in 2009, ADSE assumed full administration of the aviation operation.

What had begun through international missionary aviation was now being carried forward by a national organization.

Helping Missionaries Go Farther

Missionary support remains at the heart of ADSE's work.

The organization believes aviation can multiply the efforts of missionaries and local churches working to spread the Gospel throughout Ecuador.

Missionary partners can receive subsidized flight rates, making aviation more accessible for ministries that need to transport people, supplies, or equipment into difficult-to-reach locations.

For a missionary or church worker, that can mean turning an exhausting journey through remote terrain into a much shorter flight.

The airplane becomes more than transportation.

It becomes a tool that helps ministry happen.

Serving Humanitarian Organizations

The same aviation infrastructure that supports missionaries can also serve organizations meeting practical needs.

ADSE works with government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and other groups that need transportation within Ecuador.

Flights can move passengers or cargo into areas where conventional transportation may be difficult, allowing humanitarian and development organizations to reach communities more efficiently.

This continues the service-oriented identity that has characterized Alas de Socorro since its missionary beginnings.

Aviation Built Around Safety

Serving remote communities requires more than simply having airplanes available.

It requires experienced pilots, trained mechanics, reliable aircraft, and a strong commitment to safety.

ADSE is certified by Ecuador's civil aviation authority as an air taxi operator and also operates an approved aircraft maintenance organization.

Its fleet includes Cessna 206 aircraft designed to operate from short and unimproved airstrips—an important capability when flying into isolated areas.

The organization also provides professional maintenance and avionics services to other aircraft operators in Ecuador's Amazon region.

Aviation With a Greater Purpose

Alas de Socorro has changed considerably since missionary aircraft first began flying over Ecuador in 1948.

The organization is now Ecuadorian-led, self-sustaining, and professionally certified for the aviation services it provides.

But its Christian roots and spirit of service remain central to its story.

At the heart of Alas de Socorro del Ecuador is the belief that aviation can overcome barriers that geography creates—helping missionaries extend the Gospel, enabling humanitarian organizations to serve more effectively, and connecting remote communities with people and resources that might otherwise struggle to reach them.
