Association of Biblical Counselors

ABC equips Christians to understand God's Word more deeply and bring its truth, compassion, and hope into the difficult places of a person's life.

About the Association of Biblical Counselors

When someone in the church is grieving, struggling in their marriage, wrestling with sin, or simply overwhelmed by life, they often turn first to someone they already trust. It might be a pastor, a small-group leader, or a mature Christian friend. The Association of Biblical Counselors exists to help those conversations become deeply rooted in Scripture and centered on Christ. ABC equips Christians to understand God's Word more deeply and bring its truth, compassion, and hope into the difficult places of a person's life.

Counseling as Part of Discipleship

ABC sees biblical counseling as something closely connected to ordinary Christian discipleship.

Christians already encourage one another.

They listen when someone is hurting.

They help friends think through difficult decisions and walk beside people experiencing suffering.

In that sense, counsel is happening all the time.

The question is what shapes it.

ABC wants Scripture to provide that foundation.

Its philosophy begins with the conviction that the Bible speaks authoritatively about who people are, why human beings struggle, and what genuine transformation looks like.

Counseling therefore becomes more than helping someone feel better.

It becomes an opportunity to help people understand their lives in light of God and experience the transforming grace of Jesus Christ.

Equipping People to Care Well

Knowing that Scripture matters doesn't automatically mean someone knows how to counsel another person wisely.

Good intentions aren't enough.

People need to learn how to listen carefully and understand what's actually happening beneath the surface of a struggle.

ABC exists in large part to provide that preparation.

Through its Equipped to Counsel program and broader certification pathway, Christians can develop their ability to apply biblical truth within real counseling situations.

The process is designed to serve people at different stages of ministry.

A pastor may want to become more effective at shepherding someone through a crisis.

A professional counselor may want their practice to become more intentionally grounded in Scripture.

Another believer may simply want to become better prepared to care for people in their church.

The setting changes.

The underlying goal remains the same:

Help Christians become wiser, more compassionate ministers of God's Word.

Bringing Counseling Back Into the Church

ABC doesn't want biblical counseling to exist only as another specialized church program.

Its larger vision is for biblical care to become part of the culture of the local church itself.

Imagine a congregation where people don't immediately disappear when life becomes messy.

Instead, believers know how to move toward one another.

Someone struggling finds a Christian willing to listen.

A hurting marriage finds people prepared to walk alongside it.

A believer caught in patterns of sin encounters truth without being separated from grace.

Over time, counseling becomes part of how the Body of Christ cares for itself.

That's why ABC partners with churches and organizations that want to become training centers.

The goal isn't necessarily to build another counseling office.

It's to help wise, Gospel-rooted care become part of everyday church life.

Christ at the Center of Change

ABC's approach is distinctly theological.

The organization doesn't begin with the assumption that people can be fully understood apart from their relationship with God.

Its counseling model draws heavily from biblical teachings about sin and grace while understanding personal transformation through the larger work of redemption and sanctification.

That makes Jesus central to the process.

Biblical counseling isn't simply about finding a verse that matches someone's problem.

It's about helping people see their lives within the larger story of what Christ has done and what He continues doing in His people.

That perspective also shapes how counselors approach suffering.

Sometimes a person's difficulty is connected with their own choices.

Other times they're suffering because of what someone else has done.

And sometimes they're simply experiencing the pain of living in a broken world.

Biblical counseling seeks to enter those situations carefully while continually pointing toward the hope found in Christ.

Creating a Community of Biblical Counselors

Counselors need support too.

ABC has grown from a small website serving several dozen members in 2005 into a broader national and international network.

Its membership community connects people who share an interest in biblical counseling while providing continued opportunities for growth.

The Biblical Counseling Network also helps people find churches and individuals committed to Christ-centered counseling.

Meanwhile, resources such as the Speak the Truth podcast and Called to Counsel events allow people to keep developing long after their initial training is complete.

The idea is lifelong learning.

No counselor reaches a point where they've learned everything there is to know about people or God's Word.

They continue growing too.

Helping the Church Speak Truth With Love

The Association of Biblical Counselors ultimately wants counseling to feel less like something happening on the edges of church ministry and more like a natural expression of Christian community.

Believers learn God's Word.

That Word transforms them.

Then they become better prepared to walk beside someone else.

One Christian helps another understand their struggle through the Gospel.

That person grows.

Eventually, they may become capable of helping someone else.

And biblical counseling becomes part of discipleship multiplying through the Church.

At the heart of the Association of Biblical Counselors is the conviction that Christians should be prepared to walk with people through the hardest parts of life with both biblical truth and genuine compassion. By equipping pastors, counselors, ministry leaders, and everyday believers to apply God's Word personally and wisely, ABC seeks to cultivate churches where hurting people aren't left to struggle alone—and where the hope of Christ becomes part of how believers care for one another.
